estranged mothers death
I have neither seen, nor spoken to my Mother in over 8 years. I was contacted by my Aunt last week and told that my Mother had passed away. She gave my phone number out and now the funeral home has called asking me to pay for my Mother's burial or cremation. Am I legally responcible in the State of California to pay for this and any medical bills she has from being in the hospital for days before she died? I have a disabled Husband and no money for a Mother I don't even know...and haven't known for a very long time.

That a person is a relative does not create by itself any type of responsibility as to their bills. If your mother won the Lottery wold you be able to claim part of the winnings? The funeral home just hopes yo will feel guilty enough or wish to keep the family honor so are asking you to pay. They know you have no liability.
You should call your Aunt and find out if their were any assets left to pay those expenses and then slowly turn the conversation as to what the Will, if any, said and who got the money, so that you can find out if you were given anything. You can get a copy if Will filed in probate Court or try to get by writing to person handling the resolution of estate.
