how can an executor of a living trust step down? What is the procedure needed to step down?

Ms. Avrutin is correct. The trust itself should specific the procedure for resignation of the trustee. Most of the time, the trustee can just notify the beneficiaries (if the trustor is deceased or the trustor themselves. The trust will usually also name a successor trustee. If not, the trust often will allow adult beneficiares to name a trustee. Of course, if the trustor is still living, he or she can appoint a new trustee or successor trustee.
