Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

my mother just passed away after my father who died a year ago. Neither one had a will. What happens to their possessions? Do I need an attorney to protect myself from my brothers and sisters who are closer to the property?

Depending on the type and value of the assets, there will most likely be a probate. If there was no Will, then you and your siblings have equal priority to act as the administrators of the probate estate. If there is no probate and assets are transferred by a small estate affidavit, then your signature will be required on that affidavit.
