How do I research a specific will or trust, to find out what I have in terms of legal rights?

If it has been filed with the local superior court, a requirement under California law, you can go to the courthouse and check it out. If not, you have to file a legal proceeding with the local court having jurisdiction, i.e. the court nearest to where the person was living when he/she passed away, to compel production of the will or trust.
