Legal Question in Immigration Law in Colorado

I have a J1 work and travel visa. Me and my boyfriend are getting married in a week. How do we apply for my greencard? What will my status be when my visa expires? How long do we have to wait to return to my country (Argentina) to visit my family? Thank you!

When you are married, you can apply for adjustment of status (provided that you are still in the USA). You will need to wait until your green card is approved (or advance parole is approved) before going to your home country. With advance parole, you need to make sure that you won't become inadmissible upon departure. With a J-1 visa and before applying for a green card, you need to make sure that you don't have a 2-year foreign residence requirement.

It depends on whether you are subject to the J-1 2 year home residency requirement or not.
