Legal Question in Business Law in Connecticut

I purchased the warehouse building I was leasing with another person. I continued to keep my goods in half the building for over a year. Now my partners attorney says I owe back rent for that space. There is no rental or lease agreement and I would not have participated in the purchased the building unless I could free myself from the rent. I am 50% owner of the building and company that purchased the building. My partners attorney says it's the law that I cannot stay in the facility without paying rent. Who's correct?
