Senority and Start date taken away

Back in December 2001 I went on Workmans Comp for a Job Related injury. I was out for 6 weeks. My start date was September 3, 1996 in this Company. While waiting for my annual raise, I discovered that my start date, evaluation date and my senority date was changed to September 23rd because I was out on leave for more than 30 days. Even though I explained that this was injury happened while in the line of duty and was caused by another employee (I was assaulted), HR claims that they treat all leaves alike and any leave over 30 days, you lose your time. Is this legal? If not, how do I get my 20 days back? I'm sure that this question may sound a little petty, but, I did not ask to get assaulted and I did everything medically possible for 2 years to avoid the surgery. Surgery was the last resort. Now I am being punished. Our company does backround checks and is not supposed to hire anyone with a criminal backround and this individual had been convicted, on more than one occassion, of assault and battery. So, in my eyes, the employer put me, or someone else, in a position to be harmed.

If HR's action affects your the amount of wages you earn and benefits you receive there might be a wages and hours law action. You should definitely discuss the matter with HR setting forth your objections to the change.
