collection agency contacts 3rd party

Can a collection agency legaly contact a third party and divulge details of the debt(amount, etc.)- and try to induce the third party to pay the debt? This before contacting the debtor? This is an old debt, apx.5 years Collection agency is in N.Y.

You don't provide enough information. Did the 3rd party co-sign or guarantee the debt. Hard to see why a collection agency would otherwise just contact a third party.
