Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

debt of deceased spouse

If no assets at death, is there a law that protects the surviving spouse from debt collectors of medical bills for deceased spouse? If so, how can I get a copy of the law to send to the collectors?

Unfortunately, such a law does not exist. Florida laws can be found online at:

A husband is responsible for the medical bills of his spouse. Many times a wife will sign a guarantee for the husband, thus making her responsible for his debts. If the bills are substantial, I would suggest you consult an attorney to see if there is any way you can negotiate a reduction of the amounts due or if there is any way to avoid some of the amounts altogether.
