Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida
Is it legal to tell people not to pay their bills?
I have significant credit card debt, and decided to employ a debt settlement company to settle off the accounts (dumb decision). In order to participate, I had to stop paying all my bills. Months later, none of the accounts were settled and I had payed the company a great deal of money for their services. And, I have totally destroyed my credit rating. I would like to know if I have any legal recourse against them for following their requirements not to pay my bills -- since I now believe this is illegal!

Hello, you may have recourse against the company. If they didnt do a compentent job, and in effect caused you damanage, you may be legally entitled to a remedy. However, you need to find a lawyer who will help you. Unless you can find a lawyer who can handle it on a contingent class action basis, you will have to pay the lawyer hourly, and then have to collect. Perhaps a lawyer can get a settlement for you without too much cost. Best wishes,
