A controlled buy typically consists of an undercover agent or a confidential informant (citizen working with law enforcement) purchasing narcotics from a suspect. Law enforcement usually records the sale by way of audio or video surveillance. However, that is not always the case. Sometimes law enforcement will rely on testimony from the LEO or CI to substantiate the claim that a sale occurred. As with any criminal case, the strength of the prosecution's case depends entirely on the evidence collected during the investigation.
