Under FL law, a minor of at least 16 yrs of age may be emancipated by court order. A parent or other adult representing the youth may petition the court. Of course, marriage will result in emancipation. Your friend is in a difficult situation. If his mother is unable to be reasonable, he should discuss the matter with a family friend, family assistance agency, or legal aid agency. The described physical abuse of the parent may justify his moving out.
