We all came to this side of the Atlantic and won our independence from the kingdoms of Europe so we would not have to go to debtor's prison. She should be able to make arrangements to pay the debt down over time, not use the card and hopefully lower the interest rate.

Relax.... you mother will never have to go to jail in the State of Florida or anywhere in the United States for failure to pay any debt. The worst that can happen is the creditor will get a judgment against her. The judgment will show on her credit report and damage whatever credit she may have.

If the situation warrants, she can choose to file for bankruptcy to discharge this and other debts.
