Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida
Employee Fines
In the state of Florida, is it legal for an employer to fine an employee who makes a mistake? I work for a mortgage company who has now decided to fine certain, but not all individuals who make mistatkes on specific files. This was never issued in writing, and employees will be fined a penalty of at least 25% of their paycheck. Do they have a legal leg to stand on?

Re: Employee Fines
If you have an agreement with your employer to be paid a certain commission and it is now being unilaterally changed, then there may be some redress of breach of employment agreement. If this fine is implemented and employees are actually fined then, they should consult an attorney.
Re: Employee Fines
There is probably nothing illegal about "fines" because the law requires that your employer pay you the minimum wage of $5.15/hour, and as a result, as long as your pay does not dip below the minimum wage, the practice would not seem to be illegal.
