Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida
My husband was employeed for a company that is based in Mobile, Alabama but have locations in Florida and many other states. He worked there for a year on April 1st. During his employement he was given a promotion in March. Although he was given this promotion in March they told him his raise would not start to April 1st. On April 5th they let him go and told him it was due to his driving record in which they where suppose to pull before his employement even begain. Can they do this after a year?

Florida is an employment at will state so an employer can fire you husband for pretty much any reason as long it is not in violation of a contract or a Federal or state law. Did he have a contract with his employer? Was his termination due to discrimination based upon his race, age, sex, religion, disability or based upon him filing a workers compensation claim or whisteblowing about illegal actions of the employer? You should confer with an attorney to discuss these issues to see if he has a remedy for his termination. You can speak with my office if you wish to discuss these issues further.
