Is it legal for an employer to deduct money from a pay check for any reason? For example, a sandwich shop employee burns bread, and the owner of the store takes away the cost of the burned bread from the employee's paycheck.

An employer is not allowed to deduct money from an employee's paycheck for any reason.

In your specific example the employer was not allowed to deduct money from your paycheck for burned bread.

The burning of the bread as long as it was not done by you intentionally to cause damage to your employer represents a risk of doing business that has to be assumed by the owner.

The employer has several opportunities to correct the situation, supervise its employees more carefully, train them, and if the situation is not corrected then the employer can fire for repeated mistakes due to incompetence but in no situation it is allowed to deduct the money from the check.

That is an impermissible deduction and it is against federal law based on the limited information you have provided. You may have a claim. You should seek the services of a competent attorney who on more thorough examination can determine the strength of your claim.
