Overpayment of wages

My employer states that they have been over paying me for the last 4 months. I never really noticed it on my paycheck because I work different hours every week. When I looked back on my paychecks I found that there was an overpayment of 50 cents per hour. My employer wants to keep my next paycheck because of their mistake. Can they do this?

If you were overpaid, the employer can make up the difference.
