Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Resign or you're fired

Today, I was called into HR and told I was being let go. I was not given a reason. Not given severance. I've been working for the company 11 years and have done nothing wrong. I know the reason. It's because my boss has issues with my personal life. He does not like the fact that I left my husband because it is against his religion. But I can't prove that. Anyway, they just terminated me and I sat outside and they called me back in after a while and said if I signed resignation papers, I would be entitled to severance and insurance. I haven't signed anything. I requested a copy of the resignation letter and they did not want to give me a copy.

Can they fire me with no reason?

Am I legally entitled to a copy of that letter?

Should I sign the document?

Am I better off letting them fire me and collect unemployment?

Do I have a case? Can I sue for anything?

Re: Resign or you're fired

They can fire you for no reason; they cannot fire you for an impermissable reason. It depends on what you can prove, however.

There may be violations of Federal or Florida law here but I would need to discuss with you in more detail. Feel free to call or e-mail me with further information.
