sick leave employee rights

a co-worker of mine was threatened to be suspended if she asked for any more sick leave due to her son's serious illness. It was also suggested to her that she resign if this was going to continue. can anyone point out any specific laws that protect employees from things lick this? She works in the state of Florida.

The Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) applies to employers with 50 or more employees and covers employees who have worked at their jobs for at least one year. The FMLA not only requires covered employers to provide 12 weeks of leave (in a 12 month period) to employees for a serious medical condition (or that of a child or spouse) but it also prohibits employers from retaliating against an employee who has taken such leave or simply tried to exercise their rights.
