Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

We are currently leasing a home from a family not an agency. The home is in default from their mortgage and is going to go into foreclosure. They told us last month to get out and we have made plans to move by the end of June. A couple of months ago we had an issue with the sewer system and the pump broke and had to be replaced. The owners are now telling us they will not be giving us back our $1800 deposit because we should pay the sewer bill. There is nothing in our lease to say we are responsible for the maintenance of the sewer system. My question is today our rent is due and we are worried about giving these people another $1600 when they already have $1800 of our deposit and the bank could take over the home at any time. We would appreciate any legal advice you could give. We live in Tallahassee Florida

Contact the Leon County Clerk of Court and ask about depositing your rent money into the Court Registry If legal action is taken by either party, the court will have a hearing and decide about the money in dispute.
