Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

We put down first month, last month and a security deposit when we moved into our rental house seven years ago. My rent was raised periodically over the years as my lease was renewed. When we gave notice that we were moving and buying a house, my landlord called me to say that I owed them the difference between my last month rent that was paid seven years ago and my current rent amount. I needed a letter from my landlord for the mortgage company so that I could secure my mortgage and the property leasing company refused to give it to me without collecting the difference. I had no choice but to pay them at the time but feel that I was extorted for three hundred dollars. I thought that "last month rent" means last month rent.

You could pursue your claim in small claims court. I am not sure of all the details but seems that your Landlord charged you more money for the old lease and the current amount under the new lease. This is not what you agreed to according the lease. I also have an additional question about whether not the landlord returned the security deposit.
