Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

I am a renter, and there was a fire in my building recently. Last week, I noticed trails of "bugs," which I have now determined to be termites. I notified the LL orally on the first day, left a message leaving the apartment (too many), in writing the 3rd day, and the LL did not come to look at the apartment until the 6th day. The LL now refuses to abate the rent for the 5 days that I was not in the apartment due to the insect problem. Is that ok under FL law? Also, he said they were ants, but they are clearly termites. What can be done about that denial?

Without confirmation of a pest inspector it could have been ants. If there is no clause in your lease to cover this, have you looked at your renters insurance policy to see if you are covered. If not, there may not be anything that you can do. In the future, you must send certified mail return receipt requested - in those instances you can pay your rent to the registry of the court and without it from him until the problem is solved.
