Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida

My ex boyfriend bought me an iphone for Christmas last year. In January I accidentally messed it up. He said that he would fix it as soon as the new software came out in June. In May we broke up but he still promised to fix the phone for me. At the end of June I emailed him and asked him the progress of my phone. I told him that someone wanted to buy it off from me. He said that I could meet up with him or he could mail it out. I did not hear anything back from him in a couple weeks. I finally text him about my phone. He said that he would not give it to me because it is his property because he has the receipts. I told him that it was a gift and he promised to fix it for me. I don't know what to do. Am I right or wrong for wanting the phone back? It was a gift.

Technically the phone is yours, but you had no grounds to make him fix it.
