Legal Question in Business Law in Georgia

My daughter died a very tragic death that was covered very intensively in the news media a few years ago. A year after her death I wrote a recounting article of of what really happened to her. That graphic article made a very powerful impact on people and that impact caused the article to be distributed all over the place. It has been brought to my attention that the article would make a powerful video documentary. The purpose of the documentary would be to warn people of the danger that took my innocent daughters life. NOW TO MY QUESTION. Should I first have my article copyrighted before I do anything with anyone in the way of a documentary? I want to warn people of the danger that could befall them but I also want to make sure that the facts are presented in a way that is truthful and honors my daughters memory? Thank you.

You obtained copyright protection rights for your article as soon as you wrote it (assuming it is an original work of authorship). So, you don't need to register it before having any discussions about it. However, I would advise that you retain an attorney to advise you and review and proposed contracts before you execute anything so that you do not lose any of your intellectual property rights.
