Your question is vague, but it is common practice for attorneys and other professionals to request deposits up front prior to beginning work.

Re: purchase of a pizza shop

Are you speaking of a deposit on the pizza shop or a deposit (retainer) with the attorney? If the former, and if you intend on using an attorney, why not wait until you have met with the attorney before making the deposit? If the latter, that is very common for an attorney to request a retainer prior to working with a new client.

Your question is vague.

However, if you don't feel comfortable making a deposit without seeing and speaking to an attorney first, find another one that may just require a small consultation fee and a retainer after the contract is signed.
