Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Georgia

False Imprisonment/Battery

I was taken & lead back into a Department store, after being accused of theft. After an hour of detainment & having my bags searched & ''frisked'' by a police officer, I was finally released. I want to know what can be done abou this matter.

Re: False Imprisonment/Battery

Why did it take an hour to have your bags searched? What occurred in the meantime?

Normally, in Georgia, merchants can detain you for a reasonable time if they believe that you have taken their merchandise. The issue is reasonableness in the detention.

You can write the headquarters of the store, inform them what occurred and see if a settlement can be reached.

Otherwise, you have a certain timeframe in which to file a lawsuit. If you don't want to handle the matter yourself, you should go to an attorney immediately for a consultation.

Where was the store that this took place in, Georgia or Florida? If in Florida, give me a call to discuss in more detail.
