If (and I say if) there is a judgment, it will be in the court's record. You should go to the court and confirm there is in fact a judgment against you.

If there is one, you should attempt to work out an arrangment with the attorney IN WRITING to satisfy the judgment. For your security, you should limit your contact with the attorney through written correspondence or tape recorded conversations (tape record if permitted by law or by permission).

If you want to challenge it, you should see if t here was proper service. If you knew nothing about the court action, there may be issues regarding proper service.

If there is a judgment against you, they already sued and won. I am not sure why you are asking if you "have to pay." If it is your debt, pay it.

If there already is a judgment, you are asking way late, but see a lawyer immediately and do not talk with the creditor until you do. You have posted far too few facts to answer further.

If they have sued you and obtained a judgment against you, depending on when the judgment was entered and other factors, then you could hire an attorney to file a Motion to Set Aside Judgment. Otherwise, if you file bankruptcy you may be able to include it in your bankruptcy case. If they have only contacted you about paying the debt, you should look into the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) to see how you should respond to the initial letter you received from the attorney. You can also hire an attorney to represent you if they do sue you.
