With the facts that you have provided, it appears the collection company is attempting to collect on a debt in which the limitations period has expired. All too often those who don't know their rights will pay just to stop the calls.
You are in Georgia, so it is legal to tape record conversations secretly if you want. If they call again, tell them you dispute the debt and don't call again. Also, put it in writing and demand that any further correspondence should be done in writing. If you should receive a call after you have told them to stop, you should contact an attorney. Also, check your credit report and see if if shows up there. IF it does appear, there are procedures you must follow to protect your rights.
I would be happy to discuss the matter further with you. You can contact me by e-mail or on my Georgia line.

Most people would exercise honesty and pay bills they owe, if they were able, regardless of a legal way to avoid paying. The statute of limitations does not mean a debt disappears. In your case, if you truly do not remember the debt, the collector should follow up in writing with validation, upon request. If it turns out you do recall owing the debt, you can simply pay it and end the matter.
