Credit Card Summons
I received a summons that states I have 30 days to answer. This is on a Credit Card debt from 2002. I received a notice last year for over $2000 I sent a request for an itemized stmt an never heard back until I was served on 2/1/08 can I contact them verbally for a settlement or how should I handle now they say I owe over $3000 when orig it was around $800.

You didn't state what court this case was filed. In any event, being represented by an attorney is recommended. However, if you don't want to do so, you need to read the rules regarding answering complaints. For Georgia, go to www.georgiacourts.org/rules.html. It is strongly recommended that you protect yourself by filing and serving an answer and/or other response in accordance with the court rules and the time set forth in the summons.
You can always negotiate a settlement before you file the response or after you file a response. However, always keep the deadline in mind and don't miss it.
