Homeonwer's Board used a law firm to sue deadbeats. Law firm ran up fees 7xs the principal, We have no engagement agreement, no fee agreement. Can we break sever our relationship? There is no written contract.

If the Homeowners' Board wishes to change law firms, it probably can do so; however, if the law firm filed liens on the association's behalf, then very likely, it is entitled to be paid on the work that it did on those matters. You failed to state how the firm failed to follow directions, did unauthorized work, or anything else improperly. Discuss billing with the lawyer in charge. As for changing firms, there are a few firms in metro Atlanta that specialize in representing associations, and have an efficient system. They are likely a better option than firms who solicit any and all cases, and obviously, you'll want to discuss fees and expenses in advance.

If the HOA believes that the fees are not what was planned or agreed upon, you can seek to settle the dispute with the Georgia Bar Association, which has a service to resolve fee dispute matters (Fee Arbitration Program). You should call the Bar Association to find out about the service or go on line at www.gabar.org.
