Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Harassed

A doctor's office recently sent me a bill claiming that I disputed a charge on my credit card and caused them a charge back fee. The last 4 dgits of the credit card they gave me are not mine. I suspect that they accidentally charged someone else's credit card, so THEY disputed the charge. But the doctor's office won't believe me - they insist on ''proof'', but they want me to show that I never disputed a charge on THAT credit card. Since it's not my card, I can't show them any statements or anything.

This office continues to harrass me monthly and charge me interest on the fee, demanding either payment or ''proof''. How can I get them off my back?

Re: Harassed

There are several ways to handle this matter.

One way is to send a letter to the billing officeby certified mail return receipt. The letter should breifly describe what has occurred so far and state the credit card (stating the last 4 numbers) is not yours. You should also demand the entire credit card number and the imprint or computer receipt that prints out the name of the credit card holder. Because they believe it's yours, they should have no problem providing you with the computerized receipt. Also, you should have your receipt from that transaction, which includes the credit card you used. If so, provide a copy of the receipt with the letter. If you don't have a receipt, provide the last 4 digits of the card you used.

At the end of the letter, you may want to state that they are to have all further contact with you regarding this dispute by written correspondence only.

If the calls and claims against you don't stop after that, you should think about taking time to make a office visit to a consumer law attorney in your area.
