when my grandmother passed away, i received my mother's share of her estate(my mother has passed away,also). my mother's brother has decided that it is my responsibility to pay my mother's share of having the cemetary lot paved and coping added. can i legally be made to pay him for this. i have not signed any thing stating that i will pay him any money. he has made this decision on his own. he says if i don't pay him my share he will take me to small claims court.

If you are concerned that you are being taken advantage of, then you may need to hire an attorney to review the pertinent information and give you a status report. This probably could be accomplished within a limited time period, so the expense would be minimal and it would apprise you of whether you are being taken advantage of. Obviously you can find a lawyer to take a fee for reading the documents, but your first option should be to work it out. Family disputes over such things are not good. Depending on the benefit you received from the estate, the reasonablness of the expenses, and the contribution of others, it may be something for you to consider. Either way, try to work it out before paying lawyers and going to court, and causing irreparable harm within the family.
