student loan

i got a letter from a debt collector about a student loan over 20 years ago. i called them to work out a payment plan , they will only do it if i give them my bank account info, and debt my account. they will not let me send a check each month. what should i do. thank you .

I strongly recommend that you not allow them access to any checking account. If possible pay them all at once. There have been horror stories about these type of transactions. Also I would not trust them without getting everything in writing including the fact that they actually have the legal authority to collect on behalf of your original creditor.

In any event, if you want to go along with this monthly scheme, open a separate account at another bank. Make sure that the account does not pay checks or automatic debits if they "accidently" take too much money out of your account. Just keep enough money in this temporary account each month to pay for that month plus any bank fees. Once the debt is paid off, close the account.
