Potentially you're taking a risk. It is illegal for a convicted felon to be in possession of a firearm. That is a felony. Whether you could end up in jail is fact dependent - is the gun considered to be in your possession? In other words, how close is too close? Instead of seeing how close to the grey line can you be, the safe answer would be not to be in the car with them.
