Name Trademarking

1.I need to trademark a few names but I would like to do a search first for them with out paying..how do I do so?

2. Also can I file for a state trademark because of a small current budget?

3. Where do I start and what is the best company?

The US Patent and Trademark website is a good place to start - http://www.uspto.gov/index.html. The GA Secretary of State's office is also good - http://www.sos.state.ga.us/corporations/trademarks.htm. You can search for free on both sites. If you are serous about protecting the trademarks, then I would recommend speaking with a local IP attorney.
