Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

my 7 year old's father never signed her birth certificate and now is starting the process of legitimizing her and having her name changed.She does'n't want her name changed is it possible for her to keep her current last name and what do I do to stop her father from doing this?

First of all, you need a lawyer! There are many issues bigger than the one you asked, including custody and child support and a parenting plan. Name changes are prety routinely granted in these cases. I've had better luck seeking hyphenated names (HIS-YOURS) as a compromise than fighting the change. Again, you need a lawyer badly and you need him yesterday.

You do need an attorney. One thing is a definite. Even if you lose the name change fight, when the child turns 18, the court cannot stop her from changing it back to her current last name. So, in the short run, he may be able to win the battle, but in the long run, he can definitely lose the war.
