The fact that you are having to ask lawyers what to do makes it pretty clear you need a lawyer. No one here knows the first thing about the situation, and geting detailed guidance for a pending case is not appropriate here. If the issues with your son are important, you'll get a lawyer.

I get from your question that the divorce decree has been issued by the court and the case is otherwise closed. Nevertheless, as a general rule, it is better to hire an attorney for family law matters.

However, if you insist on doing it alone, you should do legal research on your issues. The first step is to find your closest public law library. You can do your research online, but make sure the information is Georgia specific and up-to-date.

The fact that you asked the question you asked is reason enough to hire legal counsel.

Whether you can seek to modify a decree, how to do it, and the risk you take that you will open up a Pandora's Box of counterclaims make is vital that you have counsel. Given that you can make things worse without counsel, it would be better to wait until you can afford to proceed than to screw up and file pro se.

As Scott said, if your son matters to you, then doing it right should also matter.
