Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

My girlfriend and I have been together for 8 years and I've been living in the same house with her and her dad for 6-7 years now. He has been disabled and I have been supporting the house hold for about two years now. Things are not working out and they say if i leave they will sue me for abandonment. Is that legal and can they do that?

No, and no. If you are living together in Georgia, that relationship has no basis in law, and you are free to leave.

If you were married, they may have a claim. Georgia doesn't recognize new common law marriages. Therefore, you can leave.

I assume you don't have children with her. If you do, and you have legitimated the child, you can bring an action for custody/visitation.
