Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia
Spouse adopting other spouses child
I've been married almost 6 years and my husband would like to adopt my daughter I had out of wedlock. Sad to say that I don't know who the father is. My daughter is now 14. What steps can we take?

Your husband could file a step-parent adoption petition. You would need to sign papers indicating your consent and the information about the child's father and your lack of knowledge about him. Your daughter would also need to sign a consent. The papers would be filed in the county where you and the child reside.
You should have an attorney for this matter to make sure all is done properly. Please let us know if we can help.

I'd certainly be glad to assist you. This would involve a step-parent adoption. It's a highly technical process, so you want someone who is experienced in adoptions.
Your daughter, being 14, must consent. Courts will look on a statement that you cannot identify the parent with skepticism, and this will complicate a case expense and time wise. You'll likely be required to name everyone who could be the father, and each will have to be served personally, or, in some cases, by publication.
