If you given a piece of furniture by a relative and 8 years later you are told you have to give it back, by law do you have to return the furniture? Is there a certain amount of time that passes and makes that furniture your?

If the furniture was given as a gift, it cannot be reclaimed by the gift giver. If it wasn't given to you as a gift, I need more information about how you came into possession of the furniture before providing an answer.
