Can a former employer sue an individual for saying disparaging remarks about the employer?

Anyone can sue. The issue is whether the lawsuit will have chance of success. One thing to keep in mind, the most important factor in any defamation action is the truth of the subject statements.

A person or company can sue another person for such things as slander, libel or defamation. There is no prohibition against such a lawsuit where the defendant is a former employee.
