Legal Question in Military Law in Georgia
Resigning my naval officer commission
I am a submarine officer with 10.5 years in the navy. I'm also a geobachelor. I've just been extended for a third time to August and I will have to make another patrol. My wife and I can't take this anymore. My contract with the navy expires on 14 June. If I submit a resignation letter to resign on 14 June, will it be accepted or can they deny or delay my resignation request. I know that you are supposed to submit resignations 9 to 12 months prior. Since June is less than 9 months away will the navy be able to delay my date of resignation?

Re: Resigning my naval officer commission
This comes under the heading of extension of duty for the benefit of the US military. I think that you'll have to stay. Prepare your resignation now and submit it and follow it closely until August.
My one piece of advice, I don't give much of this, as an ex-army grunt, don't do anything foolish that you'll regret for the next 40 years. I receive many letters regarding discharge upgrades and the like for being foolish etc. Making decisions while in a stressful situation is not your best option.
Hang in there until August!
