co-signing

i cosigned a lease for a friend, i never lived in the apartment and explained this to the rental office when we signed. they knew i lived in new york and he would occupy the apartment. we both signed the lease but they are telling me that im the only name on the laese. can i be held responsible for the money he owes?

Almost definitely, depending on the exact terms of the lease. That is precisely why landlords get people to co-sign leases. However, you may have an action against your friend if you are obligated to pay anything.

Well, I doubt that they did not get his signature. Nevertheless, you are liable. The good news is that they will have to pursue legal remedies against you in NY.
