State tax lien
I worked in Georgia back in 1998 for about 8 months on temp assignment - kept my home in Oklahoma city and moved back to Oklahoma. We had our taxes done by third party CPA. Just recently discovered that the State of GA has put a ''tax lien'' on our record for 8K!! We are currently trying to buy a house in Texas after just selling ours in Oklahoma - so this is the first we have ever heard of this!
What recourse do we have? How do I settle this? We payed state income tax in Oklahoma for that year - do we have to pay in Georgia too?

Re: State tax lien
Georgia does have a personal income tax. Whether you owe any tax there or not depends on a number of variables, including how much you made in GA during the year, how much you made in other states, how much your itemized deductions were, etc. The first step will be to determine how much, if any, tax you owe to the state of GA; the next steps will be to pay the tax, have the lien released, and have the information changed with any credit bureaus that have this as part of your credit history. If you're in the San Antonio area I'd be glad to help you with this.

You have to pay tax in Georgia on any Georgia source income, irregardless of where your domicile or residence is. The Georgia Dept of Revenue probably received a statement of your Georgia income, found out by cross checking that you didn't file a return and made an assessment at the maximum rate. You should obtain the original paperwork from the state, file a return for the year in question and pay any tax that might be owed. The state will then lift the lien. As for the CPA who failed to properly prepare your returns - you probably have a claim against him for any penalties and interest that may be due.
