abandoned family member

my husband's grandmother passed away almost 10 years ago. he was adopted out of the family when he was 3 years old but he still kept in touch with them. just last night he was told that his grandmother had left everything in her will to him. this may explain why that part of his family refuses any contact with him since her death. how can we find out whats going on?
