Oftentimes, credit card companies attempt to guilt the loved ones of decedents into paying their oustanding debts. Your mother should see a probate attorney to discuss his estate and her rights for a year's support (among other things). If your father's estate has sufficient assets, the credit card balance might come out of his estate. There are several questions that must be answered before the credit card companies can receive any money.

If you need additional information, I am available to discuss the matter with you.
