Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois

Question on a contract renewel

Last year I signed a 1-year contract with a fitness facility, with the monthly fee being automatically deducted form my checking account. When the year was up, I did not renew it, but the facility continued to deduct the fee because of a clause I initialed which said:

''RENEWEL OPTION:

-Must be renewed 30 days of expiration or option expires.

-You may renew this membership annually for $192 per year.

-Or this membership will automatically be renewed for $16.00 per month by Electronic Funds Transfer unless we are notified 30 days prior ot expiration.''

I understood this to be an OPTION which I had to renew or it expired. The language here seems contradictory. Under contract law, were they entitled to continue deducting this amount even though I did not renew it? If not, what do I do?

Thank you.

Re: Question on a contract renewel

Sounds like a bogus, unfair provision to me. Feel free to contact me if you should have any questions. I would be curious to know which fitness club it is.
