Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

My 78 year old mother has been summons to court for a credit card. She unable to walk and stand for a period of time and also she is unable to see clearly. She can't afford a lawyer. Is there anything that can be done in this situation. Does she need to attend court? Is there a way she can get out of it.

IT depends on the amount she is being sued for. You may be able to act on her behalf if she signs a power of attorney and the amount she is being sued for is a small claim. Otherwise she needs to hire an attorney. If she can not afford a lawyer, does she have any assets that the creditor can get? Does she having anything other than SS? If she owns a house, for example, she needs to hire a lawyer.

There may be legal services organizations in her area which may be able to assist. If she does not appear, a default judgment will be entered against her. She will not be required to stand for long periods of time, if that helps.
