friend is accused of battery if he is found guilty and sentenced to jail will he be taken immediately?

Thank you for your question. The answer is that he most likely would be sentenced and then taken immediately to jail. It depends, in some part, however, as to whether he is found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony. Moreover, it would depend on whether or not he had previously made bail.
