Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

My friend is getting a divorce, The question is : His wife has 5 children( not his) she took a loan out for one of the childrens college while they were married he thinks he is responsible for half of loan. He said he did not sign loan papers. Please let me know if he is right. Also the child who went to college has a father in this life.

If he didn't sign any "loan papers" then he is not liable on the loan. Why would he be?
